One of the biggest trends on TikTok is taking a popular sound/song and using it with your own video — but did you know you can trim sounds on TikTok to be exactly the way you want? For some people, TikTok is just an app to watch funny videos when you need to kill some time. And it’s great for that! Open TikTok, swipe through videos on the For You page, and that’s it.

But that’s just scratching part of what the TikTok app offers. In addition to being a great place to watch viral videos, TikTok also has loads of editing tools so you can make videos yourself. You can record videos, apply filters, set capture timers, and more — all directly in the app. If you want to try your hand at being a creator, the TikTok app has ample tools to get you started.

One of the most important components of any TikTok video is the sound/music that plays with it. While watching TikTok videos, you can tap the sound icon in the bottom right corner to see other videos with the same track. When creating a video, you can browse through seemingly endless sounds available to add — including popular K-pop songs, vintage tracks, trending dance songs, etc. Adding a sound to your TikTok video is simple enough. If you want to take your TikToks to the next level, you need to know how to trim a sound.

All The Steps For Trimming Sounds On TikTok

TikTok extends video length to 10 mins

To trim a sound on TikTok, you first need to add one to the video you’re making. Open the TikTok app, tap the ‘+’ button at the bottom of the screen, and tap ‘Add sound’ towards the top. After tapping the sound you want, tap the scissors icon next to it. This takes you to TikTok’s sound trimming tool!

From here, trimming a TikTok sound is pretty self-explanatory. TikTok starts playing the sound and shows a waveform of the track. Swiping left on the waveform advances further in the song so you can choose which part you want to play. Some sounds are as short as 5 seconds, while others can be a full minute. As long as the sound is over 15 seconds, you’ll be able to select the starting point and trim the sound to your heart’s content.

Furthermore, if you added a sound but want to re-trim it, you can do that any time before posting the video. While on the camera/editing screen, tap the sound at the top of the screen, tap the scissors icon at the bottom, and edit your trim however you’d like. You can’t trim your video after it’s published, so make sure you’re happy with any edits you make before taping the red ‘Post’ button.
