Samsung’s next-gen folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, will reportedly not come with the one feature many expected from it this year — a built-in S Pen stylus. The S Pen was initially bundled with the Galaxy Note series devices until the Note line was discontinued last year. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has since taken over from the Note lineup and comes with a bundled S Pen that can be tucked away inside a built-in housing.

The provisionally-named Galaxy Z Fold 4 will be the successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 that was released in 2021. The device is part of the Galaxy Fold lineup that debuted back in 2019 with the original Galaxy Fold, which suffered from multiple reliability issues related to its folding screen. However, each succeeding generation has improved on the reliability aspect, making the current model one of the best folding smartphones that money can buy.

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 smartphone will not come with a built-in S Pen stylus that many expected to be one of the distinguishing features of the forthcoming device. The news comes from the prolific tipster Ice Universe, who claimed that Samsung is skipping the feature because it wants to make the new device “smaller and thinner” than its predecessor. The claim goes against an earlier report from South Korean publication TheElec that the Z Fold 4 will feature a dedicated housing for the S Pen, leading many to believe that Samsung might bundle an S Pen with the phone as part of the retail pack. It will be interesting to see which prediction is correct, but in the absence of an official comment from Samsung, it’s best to take any rumor or speculation with a pinch of salt.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 Is Coming This Year

Even though the Galaxy Z Fold 4 remains under wraps until its official launch later this year, a series of leaks have revealed quite a few things about it over the past several weeks. The device is expected to ship with the Galaxy S22’s camera setup, which includes a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x zoom, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide shooter. Rumors also suggest that the device will ship with not one but two under-display selfie cameras, although the exact details remain up in the air. The fingerprint scanner on the new device will also reportedly move under the display, which would be a shift from last year’s model that had its fingerprint reader integrated into the power button.

Rumors also suggest that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will get a new generation M12 OLED screen that will also apparently be found in the iPhone 14 lineup. In terms of the processor, there’s no specific news on that front, but given Samsung’s recent history with foldables, the company is unlikely to cut costs here, which means the device might ship with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus SoC under the hood. The chip is expected to be a slightly higher-clocked version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and will likely offer somewhat faster performance. Unfortunately, pricing and release date remain a mystery, but given that Samsung announced the last two generations of the Galaxy Fold in August, it would be natural to expect the company to follow a similar timetable this year as well.
