How To Know If Your Apple AirPods Are Charging: Explained

Apple‘s AirPods remain some of the best wireless earbuds you can buy, but after running the earbuds’ batteries to 0, it’s important you know how to check if they’re charging. AirPods offer wearers a convenient way to listen to their music on the go. You can listen seamlessly without any wires, switch between different Apple devices, and quickly talk to Siri with hands-free voice commands.
All AirPods come with a charging case that can hold both headphones simultaneously. This case also holds multiple charges for the AirPods, so it’s easy to charge them while away from an electrical outlet. To keep your AirPods charged, just store them in the case when they’re not in use. Charging the case itself is also easy. All AirPods models support Lightning wired charging, while others work with Qi and MagSafe wireless charging.

While all of that sounds easy enough, everyone’s been in a situation where they thought their gadget was charging — only to find out that it actually hadn’t changed at all. Thankfully, Apple makes it easy to check if your AirPods are charging. All AirPods cases come with a built-in status light (found on the front or inside of the case, depending on which model you have). If the status light is amber when AirPods are in the case, that means the case is wirelessly charging both earbuds. Similarly, an amber light while the AirPods case is plugged in or on a wireless charger means both the case and earbuds are charging. A green status light indicates a full battery, and it appears in a few different ways. A green light when the AirPods are in the case means that the earbuds and case are both fully charged. A green light on the case without AirPods inside it means the case has a full charge. Finally, if the AirPods case is plugged into a power source, a green light shows that it’s fully charged and can be unplugged.

If the status light isn’t helpful enough, AirPods users can also check their charging status directly on their iPhone. Grab your AirPods, bring them next to the iPhone they’re paired with, and open the top of the charging case. If the AirPods are inside the case and charging, you’ll see a small lightning bolt icon next to each earbud.
You can also do this with the iPhone’s ‘Batteries’ widget. To add the widget, press and hold anywhere on the iPhone home screen. Tap ‘Edit Home Screen,’ tap the ‘+’ icon in the top left corner, scroll down the page, tap ‘Batteries,’ choose which size you want, and tap ‘Add Widget.’ Your AirPods’ battery now shows up on the widget any time you open the case. If the AirPods are in their case and charging, a lightning bolt appears on top of the earbuds icon. Similarly, a lightning shape appears over the charging case when it’s plugged in or on a wireless charger. Unlike the pop-up (which disappears as soon as you touch the screen), the charging status for your AirPods remains on the Batteries widget even after shutting the case.
